Great new tool for Bands and Artist but…when will we stop using the word “unsigned”???

Was cruising around on twitter which I do way to often and came across a great post, just didn’t like the title.  There are so many groups of musicians out there, but if they aren’t signed to a label, a major label, well they are considered “unsigned”.   It doesn’t matter if they gross over $100,000 or more, they are still “unsigned”, a word which just bugs me.  I prefer independent, but that doesn’t really sum it up for me either – is there a new word that one could use when describing a band or artist who is out there making things happen without a label?

Enough of my rant.    There is a new tool out there for bands and artists (I guess that is what I will use now) looking for radio play.  You can sign up with Slacker.

Check out Matt Rosoff’s cnet’s post here.

Finally, a video game that is real, well sort of.

I was so excited when I read about the new video game, “PowerGig”  on Digital Media Wire.   I don’t own an Xbox or a PlayStation, well not yet anyway.    You see, I have small children at home and if we purchase video games and all of the accessories, I want the games to have a purpose or some sort of educational value.   PowerGig will have just that.    Unlike most video games that deal with music, PowerGig will have a real 6 string guitar controller.  I have longed to buy RockBand, but each time I play the game I feel a little frustrated with my playing.  I love the music, but I am often frustrated with the controller.

I’ve gone to the PowerGig page to learn more and I just found a landing page with background music of a band warming up, kind of what you would hear if you were a band loading into the back door of a club, so no information there.

I also jumped over to the seven45Studios page too – again, to learn more information, but it looks as though the best information can be found here, their press release.

I am hopeful this game will be as great as I think it will be and that they will add more instruments too.

Hey, if you need a  game tester, pick me, because this is a video game I will love and encourage my friends and family to buy.

Artists, your Mayor wants to build an Arts Districts

Artists are pioneers.  They create something out of nothing.  Turns out this pioneering spirit is also good for business.  Last week  Rocco Landesman (Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts)  was on the Diane Rhem Show .  He announced  a new grant initiative with the NEA’s Mayor’s Institute on City Design.    Click here to read about the qualifications for applying for this grant and to find extensive list of participating states and cities click here.  Artists, contact your Mayor and find out how you can partner with your community to create an arts district.
